On Saturday, I took the drive down the Shore with a carload of goodies to move, and figured I'd stay to hand out candy to the kiddies on Halloween.
I arrived at my parent's empty house (they were in Florida until yesterday) with a basket full of candy and a hope and a dream around 11am. I figured that was going to be too early for the kiddies to show up, but I eagerly waiting in the living room just in case.
11:30am came and went. 12pm came and went. 1pm came and went. And I started to get nervous. Saturday was Halloween, right? A Saturday Halloween! A BEAUTIFUL-SUNNY-75-DEGREES-IN-NEW-JERSEY-HALLOWEEN! Where were the children?
In my day, (10-15 years ago, lol), we would have relished a day like Saturday. I guarantee we would have been out by 1pm with a map of the entire town laid out and ready to go. We knew which houses/areas to stop in because they gave out full-sized bars We knew where the Cider Lady lived. We knew where family and friends houses were, because we'd always get more candy from them.
Our goal was go get as much Trick-Or-Treating in as we could, fill up our pillow cases, and then quit around 8:30pm and head to Kristen's for pizza and a sugar coma.
Apparently that's too complicated for the youth of America today.
Around 3:30pm I finally started getting some T.O.Ters. Here's what I noticed about my town's childhood population:
- There was not a single home-made costume. Only store-bought costumes.
- Half the kids were not even wearing costumes. Sorry, it's the rule of the holiday. No costume, no candy. Period.
- The other half did not say "Trick or Treat". Um, did I miss something? Is "Trick or Treat" now taboo like "Merry Christmas"? Again, rule of the holiday: No T.o.T, no candy.
- One girl came to my door on her CELL PHONE! She stopped her conversation just long enough to say "trick or treat" and then go back to talking as I handed out candy.
I'm very disappointed by all of this. This was one of my favorite holiday's as a child, and it's just not the same anymore.
Did anyone have better luck on Saturday? Do you still have hope for the children of the future? Is Halloween going to fade away into one giant excuse for people to dress like sluts, instead of a childhood outing to collect free treats?
